As a learner aged 14 to 19 you are at one of the most critical stages of your life. What you learn and how you apply yourself now is fundamental to what you can achieve during your adult life. It could also help set you up for the career or college course you want later on.
But it’s not just learning in school that can help set you up for the future. More and more, activities outside of school can be accredited, so you get a nationally recognised certificate to provide what you have achieved.
Open College Network South West Region (OCNSWR) helps young people by working with organisations to develop courses of interest and relevance to young people that can then become accredited. We also work with schools, colleges and other organisations to enable learners to achieve nationally recognised qualifications.
For example, Step-UP is a NOCN developed range of qualifications designed specifically for the post 14 learner. The short recording below shows what Step-UP can do for you in school, college and elsewhere.

Open College Network South West Region - Step-UP qualifications
With national recognition, Step-UP is geared around engaging and encouraging young learners to identify their individual strengths so they can maximise the opportunities open to them beyond 16. As well as offering bite-sized learning units for core subjects such as literacy and numeracy, there’s a wide range of vocational ‘taster’ units covering topics as diverse as customer service, horticulture and music.
For further information about OCNSWR courses please contact your local college, learning centre or Careers Advice on 0800 100900. Click here for details of NOCN qualifications available.
