Functional Skills

NOCN’s Functional Skills qualifications are available in English, Mathematics and ICT at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. The qualifications are suitable for learners of varying ages, as shown in the graph below that shows the age breakdown of NOCN registered learners in the 2010-11 academic year.

Moving from Key Skills to Functional Skills

The Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP), in collaboration with Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) has produced a practical guide ‘Moving from Key Skills to Functional Skills’ for all skills providers making the transition to Functional Skills qualification delivery within Apprenticeships from September 2012.

How do I get approval to deliver Functional Skills?

To deliver Functional Skills you must be a Recognised Centre and achieve 'enhanced recognition status'. Ask your Development Manager or call the Plymouth Office on 01752 831500 for more information on getting approved for Functional Skills.

Entry Level

• Download assessments from the secure website whenever learners are ready
• Very little writing required at Entry 1 and 2 in Reading, Mathematics and ICT
• Clear guidance about support available to learners during the assessments
• Centre visits by experienced OCN staff to support you and your learners

Level 1 and 2

• Centres may choose up to 8 assessment dates for each Functional Skill within an academic year. Large centres may negotiate additional dates with N/OCN
• Send assessments for marking during marking windows (every 4-6 weeks throughout the year)
• Results available within 20 working days of the cut off date for each marking period
