Common Access Framework (CAF)

The majority of providers delivering Access programmes within the South West region use the Common Access Framework (CAF), a single comprehensive framework that brings together best practice across the region into a common bank of Access pathways and units.

The development of the CAF has been a major undertaking by OCNSWR and its partner FE and HE organisations and offers significant benefits to students, Access providers and HE institutions. These benefits include:

  • clearer pathways - units are available in different combinations for different pathways drawn from a common "bank" agreed across the region
  • clearer routes into HE programmes - with HE providers playing an integral part in the development and quality assurance processes, the CAF supports the work of HE admissions tutors and encouraging progression for learners
  • consistency across the region  with common unit titles, levels and credit values, to help ensure equality of demand on students and uniformity in levels of achievement
  • resource savings - less duplication in developing new provision
  • an enhanced regional approach to widening participation and lifelong learning
  • simplified operational procedures and less bureaucracy
